Long Time Coming
05:21
|
|
||
It’s been a long time coming
It’s been a long time coming
It’s been a long time coming
And it feels like coming home
I woke today, a sound so clear
Whispered close beside my ear
A different kind of song inside my heart
A day, a week, a month, a year
I feel the moment drawing near
When there’s nothing I can do but sing my part
Maybe you’ve been trying all along
To help me figure out where I went wrong
Somewhere on the journey, I must have lost my way
But I think I’ve found my footing, and I think that I can say
It’s been a long time coming, there’s still a long way to go
It’s been a long time coming, coming home
I woke today and left at dawn
Gathered up my scraps and songs
And left behind what I no longer need
The sound of earth beneath my feet
A mountain stream and rustling leaves
I hear it all in perfect harmony
If only I can find a place to stay
And maybe find myself along the way
Maybe I’d discover what I’m sure you always knew
May we never be afraid to seek the truth
It’s been a long time coming, there’s still a long way to go
It’s been a long time coming, and I think you know
Maybe the worst is behind us, maybe the best is yet to come
It’s been a long time coming, coming home
It’s been a long time coming
It’s been a long time coming
It’s been a long time coming
And it feels like coming home

Pull Myself Together
03:32
|
|
||
Every night I lie awake
Remembering the day’s mistakes
The promises I didn’t keep make it hard to sleep
I tell myself I’ll be alright, just get through the night
Heaven knows it’s true, things could be so much better
All I have to do is just pull myself together
Every morning I believe
Today I’ll be a brand new me
By the time the day is through, there’s so much I didn’t do
I tell myself to let it go and try again tomorrow
Heaven knows it’s true, things could be so much better
All I have to do is just pull myself together
Heaven knows it’s true, things could be so much better
All I have to do is just pull myself together
Every time, I say it’s fine
But that’s a lie I tell myself to be OK
Every day, I feel so far away
And all I know is something’s gotta change
Heaven knows it’s true, things could be so much better
All I have to do is just pull myself together
Heaven knows it’s true, things could be so much better
All I have to do is just pull myself together

Blessed Be the Ties
06:01
|
|
||
Sweet Patty Ann was the youngest of eight, and I’ve never known anyone kinder
She said farewell, no regrets and no fears, leaving 98 good years behind her
Lived through the Depression, gave birth to my mother
So many grandkids she lost track of the number
But always had room in her heart for another
And so Bonnie Jo was the youngest of four, and the first person I ever knew
As a mother to me, like her mother to her, she was nothing but love through and through
With a passion for beauty and truth in a song
She took that passion and passed it along, and said
Follow your heart, and it won’t steer you wrong
Not one day goes by I don’t find myself thinking about them
I’d never be the person that I am without them
Here in my heart and with me forever
Blessed be the ties that bind us together
And then Sarah Louise was the youngest of Bonnie Jo’s two, and my little sister
Raised with intent to be friends from the start, every day we’re apart, I miss her
All these years later, look how we’ve grown
Both of us now with kids of our own
Carrying forward this love we’ve been shown
Not one day goes by I don’t find myself thinking about them
I’d never be the person that I am without them
Here in my heart and with me forever
Blessed be the ties that bind us together
All the music and laughter, good food and conversations
With three youngest daughters of three different generations
Braided a knot that nothing can sever
Here in my heart and with me forever
Blessed be the ties that bind us together
Not one day goes by I don’t find myself thinking about them
I’d never be the person that I am without them
Here in my heart and with me forever
Blessed be the ties that bind us together
Here in my heart and with me forever
Blessed be the ties that bind us together
Here in my heart and with me forever
Blessed be the ties that bind us together

New American Blues
04:05
|
|
||
TV’s got me paranoid, I’m flipping through the tabloids
Another politician fell and someone got the polaroids
Presidential candidates are acting like they know me
Tryin’ to sing the harmony, but everybody’s tone deaf
Spend another million, try to buy some inspiration
Look out, kids, another media sensation, come on
Well, the internet’s a fever dream, and everyone’s a touchscreen
Algorithms showing us exactly what we want to see
I tag you, you tag me
Here’s another story that you don’t have time to read
Another application for a psuedo-destination
Now it’s three a.m., and I’m losing circulation
We got the people in the middle say the edges lost their minds
While the people in the margins trying to keep themselves alive
Left, right, up, down, check your directions
‘Cuz they’re changing all the maps before the next election
They say you can’t complain if you didn’t vote
But it’s hard to go fishing if you don’t have a pole
And now I’m sick about the deficit, the kids are gonna pay for it
Bank accounts are emptied out and no one’s taking credit
I need a direction, a new situation
Hey, look at me now, I got a fancy education
Another forty years until I finally get it paid off
But at least I got a job until they tell me I been laid off
People working overtime to earn another couple dimes
And I can’t see why needing help is still a crime
The man on the hill says we’re all on drugs
And now a few words from our corporate thugs
Sponsor me this, I got a few words, too
This is what I call the new American blues
This is what I call the new American blues

Better Next Year
05:54
|
|
||
I paid all the bills that I could, and we’ll wait on the rest
We’ve still got some time, so I’ll take all the grace I can get
Tell the mother and child I’ll be back in awhile
If they wake up to find I’m not here
I follow the star to the Old Stoney bar
For the last Jack and Coke of the year
I know all the faces but only a couple of names
The regular players playing the regular games
We’ve all earned the right to be here tonight
Pretending we’ve nothing to do
But I recognize that concern in their eyes
Mostly ‘cause I feel it, too
There’s plenty of room in the stable
Peanuts on every table
And I’m raising a toast to the ghost of Christmas cheer
Peace on earth
Here’s hoping it’s better next year
And the wiseman who’s pouring the drinks, well, he’s pouring them strong
But he’s eyeing the clock, so I’d better be moving along
I say “Give me a shot of the best stuff you got”
As I hand him a couple of tens
By the time this one’s over I’ve drunk myself sober again
There’s plenty of room in the stable
Peanuts on every table
And I’m raising a toast to the ghost of Christmas cheer
Peace on earth
Here’s hoping it’s better next year
I step out in the cold to make my way back home to you
Just a couple more days ‘til this miserable year is through
I stop at the door and look out once more
At the snow that covers our yard
There’s nothing I’d trade for this life that we’ve made
I just wish that it wasn’t so hard
There’s plenty of room in the stable
Peanuts on every table
And I’m raising a toast to the ghost of Christmas cheer
Peace on earth
Here’s hoping it’s better next year

Fare Thee Well
04:40
|
|
||
It only took a weekend to fall in love
Just a day or two until we knew
This was the place we were dreaming of
Now six good years are behind these tears
That are falling from the sky
So I’ll leave you with this parting glance
Because it’s too hard to say goodbye
Fare thee well, sweet Kentucky
Fare thee well, old Louisville
I’m gonna try to take it easy
Just like I know you will
The highway gives me time to reminisce
With MMJ on FPK--so many things we’ll miss
Then the station picks up static
As we travel out of range
I’ll turn the dial in another mile
And hope you never change
Fare thee well, sweet Kentucky
Fare thee well, old Louisville
I’m gonna try to take it easy
Just like I know you will
We’ve moved a lot; I’d guess we will again
We’ve only got these lives we’re living in
And we’ll be back, I promise that
Even if just passing through
I know you’ll always be here
And a part of me will, too
And when my time is finally over
No matter where I’ve roamed
Take me back to sweet Kentucky
My once and always home
Spread my ashes on the Ohio
Put my stone up in Cave Hill
Because I’ve seen the gates of heaven
And they’re down in Louisville
Fare thee well, sweet Kentucky
Fare thee well, old Louisville
I’m gonna try to take it easy
Just like I know you will
Just like I know you will

Back to Tokyo
03:57
|
|
||
Thirteen hours in a crowded plane
Just got back in the States again
Bus ride home in the pouring rain
All I want is sleep
So much talk with so little to say
So many things to do today
Back to the rhythm of our busy ways
But all I want is sleep
Let me go back to Tokyo
Where everything feels different
And it’s OK to be alone
Help me to forget about
My worries here at home
And let me go back to Tokyo
Drop my bags just inside my door
Strange to wear shoes in the house once more
Leave my clothes on the bedroom floor
All I want is sleep
Take me back to those busy streets
So much to see, so much to eat
I want to get lost and forget about me
And if I’m going to dream
Let me go back to Tokyo
Where everything feels different
And it’s OK to be alone
Help me to forget about
My worries here at home
And let me go back to Tokyo
Karaoke until 2 am
Stumble out with your new best friends
Neon lights and a long walk back
Tiny room and a bedtime bath
All your problems, all your worries
All that work and all that hurry
All your pain and all your pride
Disappear on the other side of the world
Let me go back to Tokyo
Where everything feels different
And it’s OK to be alone
Help me to forget about
My worries here at home
And let me go back to Tokyo
Let me go back to Tokyo

You've Got a Way
04:54
|
|
||
You’ve got a way of picking me up, dusting me off, helping me stand
And you’ve got a way of making me quiet, keeping me honest, slowing me down
You take me in and pull me closer
And in that moment, that’s when I know
That whether I’m miles away or inches close
You’ve got a way of bringing me home
And you’ve got a way of holding the mirror, catching the light, and letting me see
That you’ve got a way of showing me freedom, nudging me closer to who I could be
You help me find peace when I’m restless
And in that moment, that’s when I know
That whether I’m miles away or inches close
You’ve got a way of bringing me home
I’ve got a way of losing myself
Wandering near or far
One thing I know, wherever I go
That home is wherever you are
You take my hand and walk with me
And in that moment, that’s when I know
That whether I’m miles away or inches close
You’ve got a way of bringing me home
You’ve got a way of bringing me home

Over and Over
06:04
|
|
||
Well, you’ve got your ways
Of silently suggesting
That a little space
Might do us both some good
In a quiet place
Echoing these questions
That I can’t erase
But I wish I could
I do the same thing over and over and over…
Well, you’ve got your ways
Of saying without saying
That I’ve got my days
When I’m my own worst friend
I guess I have to face
It’s me I keep betraying
And if that’s the case
When will it end?
I do the same thing over and over and over… and over again
Well, you might say
I’ve finally learned my lesson
But it doesn’t work that way
That’s why I do the same thing over and over and over
I do the same thing over and over and over… and over again

Airstream Trailer
03:44
|
|
||
Something always happens when the calendar turns to May
I start thinking about the ways that we could spend our summer days
Well, nothing could be finer than to go to Carolina
Take it easy for a week or two
We talk about yearly and I know you’d love it dearly
So I think it’s time we followed through
We could take a train or a bus or a plane
But I’d rather we just take our time
We could get there in a day if we went a different way
But the scenic route will do just fine
Heaven is a place full of love and grace
But we’ve found a little piece on earth
We could go faster and a whole lot safer
But everything’s better with an Airstream trailer
Traffic’s looking good, and the West Virginia skies are clear
Take it gentle through the Smokies and remember that second gear
We could take it all the way to the Outer Banks
And we could make it if we drive all day
But honey, don’t worry ‘cause we don’t need to hurry
There’s a lot see along the way
We could take a train or a bus or a plane
But I’d rather we just take our time
We could get there in a day if we went a different way
But the scenic route will do just fine
Heaven is a place full of love and grace
But we’ve found a little piece on earth
We could go faster and a whole lot safer
But everything’s better with an Airstream trailer
Well, the trailer’s rocking, the engine’s knocking
The tires are humming and everything’s coming together
I guess a hotel’s fine if you’re so inclined
But I gotta believe this is so much better
Hey, I think I see a sign for a Jellystone park ahead
But if you don’t mind, I’ve got another idea instead
Even though we’re just arriving I’d prefer to keep on driving
There’s a lot of country yet to see
Traveling the nation on a permanent vacation
What a wonderful life it would be
We could take a train or a bus or a plane
But I’d rather we just take our time
We could get there in a day if we went a different way
But the scenic route will do just fine
Heaven is a place full of love and grace
But we’ve found a little piece on earth
We could go faster and a whole lot safer
But everything’s better with an Airstream trailer
We could go faster and a whole lot safer
But everything’s better with an Airstream trailer
